How do you answer the ‘what is your greatest weakness’ question?

Preparing for a job interview in advance is so important. Finding a list of potential questions online and running through them to prepare some answers is good practice. But even from the comfort of your own time and space, it can still be difficult to answer the ‘what is your biggest weakness?’ question. You don’t want to talk about yourself negatively in a job interview. So how can you answer honestly?

The Undercover Recruiter outlines the best way to respond to this question. Don’t resort to the popular cop-out answers such as ‘I work too hard’ or ‘I am a perfectionist.’

The best way to approach your answer, is to choose a genuine weakness that has very little impact on the position you are applying for. For example, it is okay for an electrician to be a weak public speaker. It is an honest weakness, but not detrimental to the ability to do the work.

Always follow up your answer with how you are working towards improving. This shows you are a diligent and reflective person, committed to improvement.
